GVFL Hall of Fame Inductee
2016 - Kevin Storer
High in the Strathbogie ranges lies the village of Tolmie.
The Tolmie Football Club which once played in the Benalla and district League was referred to as “The Snowmen” as they often played the game with snow on the ground.
Our next inductee came from Tolmie, however the local club had gone out of existence by the time he became of football age, so it was a 40 minute trip for Kevin Storer and his family over slushy dirt roads to play with the Mansfield football club when Kevin was sixteen. He was selected in the senior team immediately in 1974.
After two seasons at Mansfield Kevin gained employment with Australia Post, a company he would work for over the next 40 years. His appointment was at Violet Town and when he arrived, he found that they were without a Football coach. After much urging, Kevin Storer became coach of Violet Town at 18 years of age. He coached them into the finals in 1976 and 1977 before being transferred in his employment to Benalla. He played the next two seasons with Benalla and then shifted to Euroa in 1980. It was at Euroa where Kevin would really make a name for himself. His strong enthusiastic play as a ruck rover took the eyes of the GVFL selectors who named him in the GVFL representative team. Kevin relished championship football, he became a popular and well respected member of the GVFL squad and played his heart out for the League. He represented the League on 12 occasions and was given the honour of captaining the GVFL team. He was a member of the 1984 GVFL Country Championship premier team.
As captain of the Magpies over 6 seasons Kevin led the way and showed the young Euroa lads how give their all for their club. His energy, enthusiasm and natural ability made him a star player who was greatly loved by the Magpies fans. He was runner up in the Morrison Medal voting three times and third once.
In 1987 he transferred to Swan Hill and became the Captain/ Coach of the Tyntynder Football Club. It was a successful premiership year for Tyntynder. He also met his match in life when he met Mandy during his time at Tyntynder. However his heart was still at Euroa and he returned to the Magpies in 1988.
He was back coaching Euroa in 1989 and the team made the finals. Kevin was delighted with the talent at Euroa, with local names like O’Bree, Brodie, Tate and Nipper Harvey playing, he was confident of success.
Kevin led the Magpies into the 1990 Grand Final against Rochester at Deakin Reserve. The tigers were 7 goals ahead mid-way through the third term when the magpies rallied to win the game by 17 points. It was a triumph for Storer who had 29 possessions and led the way to a magnificent victory. It was his most satisfying football experience.
He spent the next year as a player with Euroa and then returned to where it all began as Captain/ Coach of the Mansfield Football Club for two years. He finished his playing career playing with two of his brothers, Pat and Brendan at Congupna. The first time the three brothers had played in the one team.
Kevin moved back to Swan Hill as the Area Manager with Australia Post, but couldn’t keep away from football. He took up umpiring and also coached junior football.
Tonight we induct a man who inspired people and gave his all to his players, clubs, Leagues and the game he loved. He was selected in the GVFL 60 year team of champions. We salute Kevin Storer for his successful football career and welcome him into the GVFL “Hall of Fame”
2019 (125 year edition) - Mick Williams
One of the interesting aspects of the GVL is the love of football portrayed by people within the League. People who are prepared to freely invest thousands of hours and a lot of effort to ensure that the League runs smoothly and successfully.
One of those people is Euroa stalwart Graeme – Better known as “Mick” Williams who has not just loved the game as a player and coach but has continued throughout his life to be involved as an administrator.
Mick grew up in Euroa at a time when a junior football competition did not exist, so he took on the role of boundary umpire for the Euroa team from 1956 until 1961 when he was old enough to get a game with the Seconds. He was elevated to the senior team in 1962. Mick just loved the Magpies, starting as a forward and centre man and as he got bigger in stature he played at Centre Half Back for the rest of his career. Euroa was at that time playing in the Waranga North East League and was a top side under the coaching of Ian Hughes, Bob Hempill and the legendary Dick O’Bree.
Mick was a member of 4 Euroa premiership sides in the Waranga League before a stint of two seasons coaching Avenel. He even coached Avenel in a winning game against Euroa. However he was back with the Magpies when they entered the GVL and won a premiership in their very first year in 1971. Mick played 50 games in the GVL before he felt he was nearing the end of his Major League playing career and he transferred to Benalla and District League club Longwood where he won the club’s best player award twice and played in Longwood’s premiership team.
On his retirement as a player Mick took on a coaching role at Euroa and at some stage coached 4 different junior teams in the one year. Mick especially loved coaching his two sons Gavin and Jeff who both played senior football with Euroa. He is very proud of the fact that 13 of the Euroa juniors he coached were to play together in the 1990 grand final team under Kevin Storer. Mick spent his working life with the Euroa Shire but made time to go back and help the magpies when he was able.
He took on the presidency of the Magpies in 1991, 92 and 93. He also acted as a Euroa delegate to the GVL for 3 years. That commenced an involvement with GVL administration which still continues today.
Mick acted as Junior Vice President for 3 years under Barry Connolly until the league structure changed and he was then appointed as a member of the GVL board of directors. When a second division of the League was formed Mick worked with Judy Pickering looking after that division.
He has been able to spend time in football due to the wonderful support he received from his wife Maureen who was also a great worker for Euroa, being president of the Ladies Committee.
Mick regards as a highlight of his football days as playing under Dick O’Bree who he regards as the best he has played with. He also says that Ian McRobert, Mick Peel and Bluey Jagoe were great men to play alongside.
He was awarded Life Membership of the Euroa Football club and the Euroa Juniors for his great support.
Mick is a great community man and after his retirement he became a councillor of the Shire of Strathbogie in 1997 and served 3 terms as Mayor. He still sits on the Council.
Tonight the GVL salutes Mick Williams as a player, a coach, a club administrator a GVL interleague official and as a League delegate for 5 years and a League board member for 23 years.
Graeme “Mick” Williams welcome as an inductee of the GVL Hall of Fame.
2021 - Scott Watson
When telling the story of inductees into the Hall of Fame, their football background usually starts with them being a top player in junior football.
Our next inductee didn’t play junior football and didn’t discover competition football until he was 21 years old. Scott Watson grew up in Melbourne and played both soccer and basketball as a youth. He became a physical education teacher and was posted to the Euroa Secondary College in 1991.
His entry into football was when he was asked to have a kick with the Longwood Football Club. He really enjoyed the football and spent 2 seasons with Longwood.
In 1993 he transferred to Euroa Club and commenced an amazing career with the magpies as a player, coach and administrator for over 30 years.
He was a natural and soon developed into a star player. He played mostly as a centre half back or full back. Scott used his fitness and class to fill a much needed roll in the back line. The Magpies were delighted to attract such a quality player into their club.
The GVL selectors noted his talent and he was a League squad member for many years. He represented the League on 4 occasions. In 1998 Scott was invited by the League to coach the GVL under 18 representative team, a task he took on with great enthusiasm.
The magpies installed him as their senior captain, a position he held for 13 years including a grand final appearance in 2005.
He won the Magpies best player award and was runner up 3 times. The name of Scott Watson appeared in Euroa teams year after year and on playing his 200th senior game he became a qualified Life Member of the GVL. He concluded his senior playing career with his 365th senior game.
Scott loved the game so much that he continued on with the reserves team and played 55 reserves games. At age 44 in 2013 he won the reserves best player award. In 2014 came a highlight of his football career, as a member of the Euroa reserves premiership team.
Apart from playing the game, Scott has served on the Euroa committee for 12 years, He has also been President of the club for 12 years and has helped out as Secretary for 5 years. He has also coached multiple junior teams at Euroa.
It is no surprise that he was awarded Life Membership of Euroa.
Outside the club he has coached the Victorian Under 15 Schoolboys football team and the Goulburn Murray Under 15 Schoolboys team.
It has been an amazing football life for a man that didn’t start playing the game competitively until he was 21 yet amassed a total of 420 games and then supported the club asministration.
The GVL recognises his magnificent dedication to the game and inducts Scott Watson into the GVL Hall of Fame.
